What is a good scope at a reasonable price? What about Tasco scopes?

I am a long time Alaskan hunter, trapper, and competition shooter.

Like all things in life - you get what you pay for.

The difference between an inexpensive scope and top of the line scope is going to be the amount of punishment it can withstand, how long it will last - and it's ability to remain accurate.

Tasco has a place for the once a year hunter who is only out a few days a year, and, takes the rifle to the range once a year to sight it in. They are great on low recoil rifles and 22's.

The problem with a Tasco is most hunters will improve their shooting and hunting skills over time - and tend to challenge the outdoors more and go for longer distance shots as the years go by. Tasco and other low end scopes are great the day the buy them, but, begin to deteriorate once used. This means as you are getting better, your scope is getting worse - and the reality is you never improve.

Once you have a Tasco on your rifle for 4-5 years you are finally accostomed to it and can usually shoot really well - and this is when it will fail. Now that you FINALLY are a decent shot - you have to start all over again a new scope!!

What is more important to you - spending under $200 for a scope today that is going to screw with your skills and fail every few years - a scope that will be replaced 4-5 times over the next 20 years. Or, spend $400 to $600 on a high quality scope that will last the next 20 years failure free?

I have gone the route of the cheap scope, watched my friends do it too. There is nothing worse than missing an awesome animal due to your scope crapping out - or going home with no trophy after a match because your scope died. Thing is, when a scope craps out - there is no warning - no bells ring or cracked glass. The inside tube that is responsible for the accuracy just wanders. Might work today, not tomorrow, ok the next.

Hope this helps
