For better accuracy, is it better to mount a mosin on an after market stock?
I am looking into accurizing a mosin. Would it be better to dump the old wood stock and mount it on an after market synthetic stock? This would eliminate the need to free float the barrel since it would be exposed and not touch the stock. Otherwise the old wood stock would have to be sanded and barrel would have to be shimmed. What are you opinions and have you done to make these old guys more accurate besides mounting a scope on them.
I currently own several dozen of the Mosins; have refinished the original stocks on some of them so they look pretty (okay, I had the time and nothing else to do). Get some of those Limbsaver slip on recoil reducing pads to lengthen the stock out a couple of inches and make it more comfortable to shoot; they also keep the metal butt plate from skittering out from under it so it can fall on your toe or something. I put one of them on an aftermarket black synthetic stock just for kicks; shoots just fine and is just as accurate as the original wood stock jobbies.
