What factory ammo is best for hunting with my rifle? Is it a Good rifle?
I just bought a Remington 700 CDL SF LIMITED EDITION 30-06 with Leupold rings and a Leupold VX-II 3x9 scope. When I go hunting, what is the best or most preferred ammo? Also, this is my first rifle and intend to make it my only hunting rifle. Most hunters have recommended the Remington 700 to me. Really, what is special about this rifle?
I intend to hunt deer, elk, and possibly bigger animals like bear.
the Remington 700 is famous for it's action. This action was both extremely strong, smooth, and relatively inexpensive. If you look at competitive custom built super-accurate rifles, or military grade sniper rifles, 99% were built around either a remington 700 action or a mauser 1898 action.
The limited edition rifles of course have that great action, and it is mated to a high quality barrel well embedded on a quality wood stock which gives the needed stiffness. If you have the type that has the X-mark pro trigger, you have the final component to what should be a very accurate performance....well, at least the final component on the rifle side of the equation.
Now, no one here can tell you what is the best ammo. Oh sure, you could simply look at the ammo sales at a big hunting store and figure out what the 'most peferred is' but I bet you don't want what is most common, but what gives the best performance.
And there is the rub. In the end, when you are talking about precision as refined as we have in a rifle, there are going to be a ton of variables that come into play. In no two rifles will all those variables be the same. This means each rifle is unique. Even compared to the rifle that rolled off the assembly line right after it, rifles are individuals. Specifically, each individual rifle has it's own likes and dislikes in ammunition.
The way you address this is you buy a box of 4 or 5 different types, and test-shoot them to see.
Now, if this is your first hunting rifle, YOU are going to be the limiting factor.
For your first few outings to the range ANY 30-06 ammo is going to be 10 times more accurate than you. I suggest you get some managed recoil rounds (see link) and work on your shooting skills until you can put 5 shots in a circle no bigger than the bottom of a popcan at 100 yards. THEN you will have the level of skill needed to start actually testing different types of ammo.
Also, in addition to what exact load gives your rifle the best accuracy, you need different performance characteristics for different animals.
The managed recoil loads are going to be great for whitetail deer and similar game. They would not be ideal for elk, and would be FAR from ideal for grizzly bear.
A general rule of thumb is the bigger the animal, the heavier of a bullet you want. For hunting grizzly, you'd want a 180-200 or even 220 grain bullet. For elk and moose, 180 grain bullets are good. For deer 150 weight is common, but bullets as light as 125 grain are fine. The 165 weight is often seen as a bridge weigh for the hunter who doesn't know what he will end up hunting. There are even light weight 55 grain loads, but in that case it is actually a smaller bullet put in a plastic sleeve to turn the 30-06 into a varmint gun.
But as I said, for your first 2 or 3 outings, go with the managed recoil stuff.
