What do you think about using a 30-30 for Black bear in the N. Cascades?

I have a 30-30 Marlin and a Tikka T3 .308 (with a scope that is overkill-8-32x44 BSA Platnium. Not sure if I should pack in my 30-30 for Black bear, or skip the .308 completely. My biggest concern is a consistant over-the-counter ammo, and which grain would you use?

For the .30-30, anything from 150gr to 170gr will work fine on black bear. The key part will be putting the bullet through the lungs. You may want to avoid shoulder shots and wait for a good broadside shot. Try different ammo and use the one that shoots best in your rifle. You don't mention if this gun is scoped or open sights. With a scope, I'd probably limit my shots to under 150yards.

The .308 would be a great choice too but you would want to switch to a lower power scope (2-7x or 3-9x). At 8x, you might not be able to tell where you are aiming on the bear. You could also use a premium bullet that will allow you to shoot through the shoulders and still penetrate through the vital organs.
