How does a gun's scope work?
I always wondered since the scope is above the barrel of a gun how is the scope accurate since the bullet is fired from the barrel and the scopes on top of it? Or even iron sights?
The sights are aligned at a fixed distance. If you aim and fire at a target closer than the calibrated distance, your shot will hit high, if farther, the shot will hit low. As the bullet leaves the barrel, it is below the line of sight of the scope. It rises on an arc and then falls to the line of sight at the calibrated distance. The higher powered the shell, the less of an arc, but all bullets follow an arc to the target. A long time ago, when I was 15, I was at a military firing range with a club target shooting. I had a single shot Winchester .22 using long rifle rounds and was in the competition for 100 yards. I tried the 1000 yard target for grins. My aiming point was about 2 feet above the target center. I was able to easily correct my aiming point to account for the drop from distance and windage to hit center after 6 rounds. The real problem was windage gusting and blowing the round off center to the side. If you are experienced, you can easily compensate for the actual distance to target as opposed to the calibrated distance. It takes several seconds for a .22 round to travel 1000 yards. It also takes someone at the target to locate your hit point and mark the spot so you can see where your round hit so you can correct your aiming point. It is impossible, even with a high powered spotting scope to see where a .22 round hits at 1000 yards from the firing line. Someone at the target has to hold up a marker large enough for you to see from the firing line to indicate where your round hit the target. It was really something to hear and feel the round leave the barrel and then a few seconds later, hear the faint pop as the round hit the target 1000 yards downrange... I never thought I could actually HIT the target at 1000 yards until I actually DID it... But what really impressed me was when I visited Hong Kong when I was in the Navy. I got a chance to fire fully automatic weapons, something under normal circumstances one can not legally DO in the USA. After a number of single semi-auto shots, a full clip, I got to fire a AK-47 on full auto, with a full clip of 30 rounds, on a private range. But the highlight was an authentic .45 caliber Thompson sub-machine gun, vintage WWII, with a 20 round clip, again after several semi-auto rounds to get the feel of the kickback. My personal weapon of choice is a simple 6-shooter, a .44 Magnum, like Dirty Harry had, only mine is 2" shorter than his. Dirty Harry had a 10" barrel, mine is only 8"... Does that mean I have "barrel envy"??? I do NOT know HOW Dirty Harry got a 10" barrel out of a shoulder holster. Even with a professionally fitted shoulder holster, I have trouble clearing my 8"!!! But then, maybe I am just a klutz... In my house, I use "short rounds" which are lightweight, low power so as to not go through walls to kill an innocent neighbor in HIS house, but STILL have the desired effect on an intruder..........
My scope doesn't work
