Farthest Range for hunting rifle???
223 Rem, 204 Ruger, 22-250 Rem.
Those are the choices for rifle rounds I'm looking into for purchasing. I want to know which type ammuntion has the longest range. I've already calculated all the terminal ballistics for all 3 types but still not sure on how to tell which will fly the farthest...
Overall Length 43"
Barrel Length 22"
Weight 7.25 lbs
Magazine Capacity 4 rounds
Stock Synthetic with Mossy Oak Brush Pattern Camo, positive checkering, dual pillar bedding
Sights 3-9x40mm scope mounted and boresighted
Rifling Rate of Twist 223 Rem (1 in 9")
22-250 Rem; 204 Ruger (1 in 12")
No one really cares what the "range" is.
For all of them, the "range" is over one mile, further if you shoot at an upward angle. Either way it is far further than you can accurately shoot.
What is important is accuracy at a distance that you still have reasonable stopping power. If you are hunting coyotes or other smaller game, any of the three will give you decent accuracy out to 300-400 meters with a good scope. I myself use the original 222 Remington, which for years was used in many matches as it was extremely accurate. The .223 is a slightly more powerful round, as is the 222 Remington Magnum. And even the .223 was not found to be totally acceptable and the military upgraded that to the 5.56 NATO. (The 5.56 NATO is NOT the same round as the .223 so do not go using that in your .223 if you buy one. It could blow the gun apart.)
However I would not use any of these for larger game. #1, many states require something of 30 caliber or bigger so none of these would be legal and #2 none of them really have the stopping power for larger game unless you are very close to the game.
As far as the scope, go with one that has a 30mm tube vs a 1 inch tube. More light gets transmitted from the front lens to the rear and you get better night vision with it. You might consider going up to a 50 mm front lens for the same reason.
Lastly, if you buy something that is NOT common, such as my 222 Remington, you will have to keep in mind your ammo supply. Best tip is to have 100-150 rounds in your vehicle no matter where you go. Go to a rather remote place to hunt and you may not be able to find ammo at the local hardware store.
In that regard, the .223 is the most common ammo of the three you listed.
