Should i get a mil-dot scope?
i am buying a .308 for deer hunting and i really like the mil-dot reticle but after reading into them they seem very complicated. i am not looking to use it for rangefinding just to have other hold points for longer shots. i am fairly new to rifle hunting but i have some scope knowledge. thanks in advance!
A deer has a kill zone of about 8 inches tall. Now take in accordance the trajectory of the firearm in question. You would want to zero in at a range that were the top of the arch in the trajectory is no greater than 3 inches above the sight line. On a 308 that should be about 250 yds. and also on a 308 zeroed in at 250 yds it should be hitting about 3 inches below sight line out to 320 to 350 yds depending on the cartridge your using. So having saying this you having sighted your rifle in at this optimum range you should be able to hold dead on at any deer out to 300 yds and hit the kill zone. This is called the optimum range every caliber has one and a good marksman know it for the weapon he is using. This will eliminate the need for these mil-dot scopes and spend the money on good quality optics without all that fancy stuff.
