HD Downloads?
Every since HDDVD dropped out of the race everyone has been trumpeting HD downloads as the next big thing. While I agree that HD VOD will come into being sometime in the future as of today it is simply not a practical idea. The way I see it the US broadband structure is simply to small and too slow to support such an industry, everyone keeps talking about fiber-optics from the telecos but I'll believe that when it wont cost my first born for a basic plan. I know that I pay quite a bit for my broadband service but will Joe Everyman pay for the kind of speeds that would be required for HD movie downloads, we still have a large portion of the nation on dial-up. Maybe movie studios and content providers should look outside the US to places like Japan and Korea who do have the tech nessesary. I could be wrong, do you think movie downloads will become the standard or will DVD and Blu-Ray be around for a long time?
FIOS and digital cable have no problem serving up digital content -- I'm watching a 1080i NASCAR race as I type this. The model for home viewing has become Netflix, Blockbuster, VOD and streaming -- not for downloading, but for rental or streaming. People who want to own the video will buy a Blu Ray but I think that's a diminishing percentage -- if the movie is available on demand, why own it? Sure if it's a favorite I will buy a copy, but if it's something I just want to see to kill a Saturday night, a hi-def rental is fine by me.
Good question. A star for you!
