Cleaning rear projection Sony KP-41S5U TV reflective mirror.?
How do I go about cleaning the aluminised reflecting mirror and what are the alignment issues.
The picture has become dull with age and I suspect the mirror has become dull. The rear of the TV can be removed with ease and I have cleaned aluminised Meade SCT telescope optics in the past but I dont want to bite off more than I can chew...
I service TV sets.....
I do my best to AVOID MOST MIRRORS....why?
Because some mirrors have specialized coatings, and cleaning them can create Streaky pictures...and then your in a whole lotta money to correct the problem.
If You SMOKE in your TV room, your Dull Picture is most likely due to smoke on your lenses and not very much due to smoke on the mirror......CLEAN YOUR LENSES first and foremost....
Spray your cloth, not the lens or the mirror and yes, you can use Windex for your LENS only.
If your mirror is backed by foam....DON'T even touch it..
If it looks kinda milky or foggy....Don't touch it...That's the special coating that can cause streaks in your picture when cleaned.
Newer Projection TVs are worse in that department....When the Samsung DLPs came out, I had a customer that WANTED me to clean it, and I warned him.....HE INSISTED sooooo....I cleaned it and he had to pay for a NEW MIRROR....Some people just do not understand even after repetitive warnings that they will be responsible for their actions....
Why did I do it? Because he was bitching over and over about me not cleaning the mirror....and I WARNED him over and over....to the point that I was sick and tired of wasting my time EXPLAINING the situation....So when he saw the results and wanted me to replace his mirror--- I showed him the paper he signed releasing me from any liability....
So if a TECH says "NO" it's for a reason.........
NOW.....DULL PICTURE can also be a White Balance on the CRTs or even Crystallized Coolant (foggy-halo look to Blue and Green crt coolant)....you need a TECH for those situations.
