Scope sighting question.?
I have a marlin 22 mag rifel, I love this gun. Sometime ago my dad put a leopold scoe on in, it always shot high and to the left. so a few months ago I sighted it in as best i could. The problem is I turned the screw that sights it in left/right all the way in one direction, so it;s damn near perfect now. The problem is that it's still a hair off. but I can't turn it anymore. How can I fix this? I guess it's a nice scope, everyone tells me it's worth more than the gun. What can I do to get this thing perfect?
Your scope mounts are simply not on properly.
Only a properly trained person with the proper tools should mount a scope.......... since a tiny bit of off center gives a + error at short range and a very huge - error at long range.
Find a 3-4 foot piece of perfectly straight pipe the same diameter as your scope. (I use a heavy piece of 1" stainless steel that has been trued to .0001") Copper would be best - you can use PVC. Insert it in the scope rings and adjust the rings until the pipe is perfectly parallel on both the horizontal and vertical axis with the barrel. The longer the pipe - the easier this is.
The above step should get you real close and solve your problem.
People who mount scopes for living would next center the scope - go al the way left, then right and count the clicks - then center the windage. Do the same with elevation.
Next, install the scope and use a Culminator to check the scope zero. (optical bore sighter). If the rings were properly centered with the barrel the scope should be only 1 gradient or less away from zero. If there is a signifigant difference - you re-check the rings.
Bottom line. You can't simply slap a scope on a rifle and call it good just because all the screws are tight and it doesn't fall off! LOL.
Funny how people will spend $800 for rifle, $600 for a scope, $100+ for good rings and bases and then tons of $$ in ammo to sight in........... but won't pay the $25 to $35 to have their scope properly mounted at the gun shop!!! Just the $$ saved in ammo alone sighting in the scope is worth the price.
Here is a hint. Most gun shops and stores will gladly mount the scope for you for free!!
Mounting a scope at home, and not having the tools and skills, is like paying $1,000 for a set of really nice tires and not forking over the $4 per tire to have it properly balanced.
Show this to your dad.
Hope this helps.
