Why do small finder scopes use an internal aperture stop?
Whats the purpose of it? why is it used? Wouldn't the field of view be better without it?
The aperture stop is a way to increase the focal length of the optics without making the Finder itself longer. This gives a wider depth of focus and also cuts down on any distortions brought in by the optical train of the Finder (which are generally made with cheap optics to begin with).
For the three scopes that I have owned (5", 8" and 11" SCT), I tossed the factory Finder the first chance I got and went with an after market Finder. Better optics, better field of view and easier to use, since the new Finder had a diagonal that gave a view that was similar to what I was seeing on the scope.
The other Finder that I use doesn't have any magnification at all. It's called a Telrad and its great for getting your scope rough sighted towards an object that you can't see. For owners of dobsonian style telescopes, they are in valuable for working with a technique called "star hopping". This is where you use brighter stars as guideposts to fainter objects and finally to your objective.
