The turbine is one of the most important components in both Power Generation and Nuclear industries.
Turbine inspection is thus the most important activity in both these industries. The turbine inspection is carried out using bore scopes for visually locating cracks and imperfections in the blades. For a thorough check use is normally made of the dye penetration method. This is essentially an extension of visual examination and comprises of a special dye that highlights cracks and imperfections. The total system consists of a cleaner, a penetrant and a developer available in 3 aerosol cans. Owing to the impractical nature, the fluorescent dye is normally not favored in the field, as it requires the examination of the crack in darkness with the use of a UV lamp.
The Magnetic Flux Leakage (Induction) or MFL is a common form of carrying out pipeline inspection in various industries. The MFL detects the extent of pitting and corrosion in steel pipelines. In a typical method known as the magnetic flux leakage inline inspection tool or the MFL-ILI the corroded areas in the pipe walls are located and assessed by firstly creating a powerful magnetic field in the pipeline and thereafter detecting the areas where the flux lines are missing.
In the improved version multiple sensors are used thereby improving upon the resolution. The anomalies are detected with a higher reliability and accuracy speeding up the process of isolating the affected section leading to a quicker repair. This obviates the need of exploratory digs and is a more cost effective solution in the management program for the integrity of the pipeline. In a sophisticated version of pipeline inspection method the location of the defect is isolated using GPS.
